The Assiginack Museum was opened in 1955 in the back area of a stone building that was originally built in the 1860's as the local jail.  In 1955, the front part of this building housed the Municipal Office and the Library.

An addition was added to the Museum quarters in 1967 to showcase a growing collection of artifacts, historic information and memorabilia.  A Blacksmith's Shop, Schoolhouse, Pioneer Home and Driving Shed were also added to this location.  When the Municipal Office and the Library were moved to new premises, the Museum took over the remaining rooms in the building.

In 1999, the Museum embarked on another expansion that included adding a 2,200 square foot wheelchair accessible addition to the main building that featured full environmental controls to aid in protecting sensitive artifacts, serve as a year round work area and to include service provision for increasingly popular genealogical research studies.

The Assiginack Museum Heritage Complex has become well known for its excellent representation and service in displaying local artifacts and providing notable historic information.  It continues to house an increasing inventory of antiquities and information of significant historic importance to this region and has played a fundamental role in raising the profile of Manitowaning as a Heritage Tourist Destination.

The Assiginack Museum is located at 125 Arthur Street in Manitowaning.
