Mayors Briefing
I would like to take a moment to inform you about some of our recent experiences, plans and progress on projects moving forward in 2026 and beyond.
This winter brought heavy snow and with Spring, we experienced a number of serious road washouts. Thanks to the investment of our taxes in new equipment and a dedicated Public Works crew, we were quickly able to repair the damage. We are applying for provincial funding assistance, but this is not guaranteed.
Council is also in the process of acquiring the OPP station on Highway 6. The primary use of the building will be to house the Volunteer Fire Department. Our volunteers do incredible work keeping the community safe and keeping up with new regulations. This decision is the most cost effective way to assist them in protecting us.
We have also recently acquired property to allow for the expansion of the landfill. It has been a very long process, but this latest development allows us to formally submit our expansion application. Waste management is a very costly service and our only other option was to pay to ship all our waste and recycling off Island at the same time we formally closed this landfill, an extremely costly undertaking. An expanded landfill is the most practical and economic option.
We also continue to lobby the Province for financial assistance for our aging infrastructure. To that end, I met this Spring with the Honourable Todd McCarthy, Minister of Infrastructure and Environment to lobby for specific assistance. This direct dialogue continues.
Please don’t forget to support our annual community organizations as they work on behalf of the community: The Museum Market Days, the Lion’s Summerfest Weekend, the Horticultural Society’s Flower Show and the Agricultural Society’s 150th Fall Fair.
I wish you all a safe, happy and memorable season as we head into the dog days of summer.
Sincerely, Mayor Reid
